Project Timeline: Planning Your Custom Kitchen Remodel Schedule
A custom kitchen remodel is one of the most rewarding projects you can take on in your home. It transforms the way you cook, gather, and live day to day. But behind every smooth project is a clear schedule. From design work to final punch list, each step has a timeframe, and knowing what to expect helps reduce stress along the way.
The Design and Planning Stage
Everything starts with design. You’ll work with a cabinet professional or general contractor to translate your ideas into a first set of drawings. That back-and-forth review process usually takes two weeks to a month, depending on how decisive you are. Some homeowners know exactly what they want, while others need to see several revisions before it feels right.
During this stage, we may provide a budgetary bid based on preliminary drawings. This helps guide decisions and gives you a realistic picture of costs. Once cabinets are finalized, countertops typically move into focus.
Cabinet Lead Times
Cabinets often set the pace for the entire project. From the time you finalize your selection, you should plan on a 6 to 12 week lead time before they arrive on site. Once delivered, a typical kitchen cabinet installation takes two to four days.
After that, the project is ready for our part: templating and fabricating your countertops.
Countertop Scheduling
We come in after cabinets are installed to create a template. That appointment usually takes just an hour or two. From template to installation, our schedule runs about two to three weeks. That’s the critical path—plumbers can’t hook up sinks, and other trades can’t finish certain tasks, until the stone is in place and sinks are secured.
During this time, electricians may finish work, and tile contractors often follow us to complete backsplashes. Each of those pieces adds a few days.
How Long Will It Take?
For a full remodel with cabinet replacement, a realistic timeline from start to finish is three to four months. This includes:
- Two to four weeks of design and decision-making
- Six to twelve weeks of cabinet production
- Two to four days of cabinet installation
- One to two hours for templating
- Two to three weeks for countertop fabrication and installation
- Additional time for backsplash, plumbing, and final details
If you’re only replacing countertops, the process is much faster. Once you’ve selected your material and placed a deposit, we can usually schedule templating within a week. From there, expect two to three weeks to installation. Most countertop-only projects wrap up in about a month.
Timing Your Showroom Visit
Many homeowners ask when to visit the showroom. I recommend waiting until you know what you’re doing with your cabinets. Countertops should coordinate with cabinet finishes, and it’s easier to choose once that decision is made. That said, some people fall in love with a slab first and design everything else around it. Either way works, as long as you give yourself enough time to make choices without holding up the schedule.
Staying on Track
The biggest factor in keeping your project on schedule is decisiveness. The longer you wait to make selections, the more delays add up. We’ve seen clients with new cabinets installed who still haven’t chosen a countertop, and that can push the whole project back.
Final Thoughts
A custom kitchen remodel isn’t a weekend project. It’s a multi-step process that relies on clear decisions and a realistic timeline. With cabinets, countertops, and finishing trades all working in sequence, planning ahead makes the difference between a stressful project and a smooth one.
